Will-o'-the-wisp (a deceitful goal)
  USA 1985
Videotape, 5:33, colour
The sub-title 'Damnation of Faust' stamps this tape as part of a long-term project, the prologue to which ('Evocation') was shown in 1983 - Birnbaum wishes to submit the problematic duality between the inner self and the outer world to fundamental examination, and so to endow everyday, even banal, transactions with a deeper and wider significance. In 'Will-o'-the-wisp' the everyday scene consists of a woman looking out from an upper-floor room at the activities of people in the street below - The life of the inner and outer world are subtly divorced from each other by a window, a favourable environment for reverie. Thinking out loud brings to light the essentially incomplete nature of memoriesi fragments and shadows, which can be filled in and filled out to make them temporarly acceptable to the empirical world. Fragmentary images in the street can for the time being remain undisturbed.
