Pain is renowned for his use of the Paluche, a camera divorced from the eye (discovered by Jean-Pierre Beauviala), which you can just hold in the hand. You film more-or-less with your fingertips. Pain follows a man who has just had an enormous row with his girl-friend. He is completely destroyed, the world has been shattered, his shaver isn't ready, he wanders like a zombie through the streets, it is finished, I've had enough. The world is messed up and even God, theatrically thumping the piano keys, cannot glue it together again. The story is in true romantic fiction tradition and fortunately ends with 'to be continued'. Fortunately, because the design fits to a tee: Our hero roams around in sepia tints, often closed in behind bars. This mini-drama magnified to grotesque size, remains fascinating. Just as the need to take notes. When shall the page turn to reveal more shocking misery?
