  Tony Oursler
Son of Oil

France has its Philippe DeMontaut, Holland has Lydia Schouten and the 'Kunst & Tijdwinst' Foundation while the United States may be proud of Tony Oursler who in 1976 decided to learn to draw like Leonardo da Vinci at the California Institute of the Arts, to go on to paint like Picasso. The atmosphere of the ivory towers changed the plans of this child prodigy of video art whose themes are 'Life, Death, Love ...'. Actors move through hand-painted expressionistic decors with equally unlikely props. Meanwhile an indescribable voice narrates or sings incomprehensible stories full of irony. Th. subjects of 'Son of Oil' are capitalism and violence. Many people will regard Oursler's work as the summit of bad taste and kitsch while for others they wil be a revelation which can be rated with the work of Keith Haring.
