  Laurie McDonald
A Dedication to Lee Choon-Sop

  USA 1982
3:00, colour
Using unusual design to depict the all-too-usual everyday reality ofoppression, Laurie McDonald provides a harrowing demonstration of the need for an organization like Amnesty International. The stereo soundtrack conveys two 'sounds' of present-day South Korean reality: one speaker pumps out a smooth commentary voice describing in true commercial tradition how wonderful everything is in South Korea at the moment, while from the other speaker we hear the voice of a South Korean describing his experiences in prison. The accompanying images of torture are surprising and effective. The work is dedicated to Lee Choon-Sop, a theology student who in 1980 dared demonstrate against the government-sanctioned murder of a fellow student and who ended up in gaol. Far from being an objective documentary in the tradition of news broadcasts, this is a committed work of art.
