Frauenzimmer means female person and this case also women's room. The action is all concentrated in a massive kitchen, but this is not a description of the oppressed housewife condemned to a life over the stove. The kitchen may be on the one hand a prison for the woman, but it is also a place of warmth; both a space of loneliness and an overpopulated room where the woman can find no peace. The title combines both the restriction to aswell as the need for a women's room. 'Das Frauenzimmer' is especially beautifully made, not narrative but an associative, experimental production with no dialogue. The images, texts and music conjure up the memories and desires, dreams and nightmares of a woman of any age. Surrealism is juxtaposed with slapstick of which the latter has until now almost been a male monopoly.
