A number of Spanish-American and Black gangs from the slums of New York no longer spend their time bashing each other's brains out. They vie with each other in 'Breaking', a type of street dancing revealing elements of the martial arts, gymnastics, acrobatics and disco. They have plenty of fun, no blood flows, yet the gangs experience excitement with machismo in dreary neighbourhoods. Najm spent several months following the 'movements' of the Rock Steadies and edited his observations into an idealistic document for New York City.
