“Was I dead before I was born? When Grandpa dies, can I have his nails?” A seven year old boy growing up in the countryside of Friesland is confronted with questions about life and death. Strange stories and half words from adults take on their own existence. But the innocent world of cows, goats and meadows in which he unconcernedly considers his questions with his pal becomes steadily more hideous under the surface and in one fell swoop is finally ruined. The imaginary world of a child is very recognisably presented in this video with autobiographic undertones; in particular the text and Winters’ voice contribute to this. You sit, as it were in the boy’s head, look through his eyes, hear through his ears and know once again what is it was like to be seven year old and with a shock to discover part of the world.
