A breath hush
  The Netherlands 1996
Videotape, 7:46, colour, stereo
Only air makes a noise under water; everything else is silent. A diver, bursting through the water’s surface, breaks that silence with the deafening noise of a jet-fighter. Air can only be seen under water, where it is impossible to breathe. Little bubbles like pearls on the skin, larger bubbles of escaping breath that shoot to the surface. The swimmer twists and tumbles, gravity under water has little effect, he can keep it up for a long time. Too long, it looks as if he wants to breathe the water. Only at the last moment does he shoot to the surface. What a relief. ‘A breath hush’ is a video that will make you breathless.
