Respectable American houses with respectable, happy families and sweet, respectable children who obediently wear their boy scout or majorette uniforms. No rows or disorder, no sorrow, and most especially, never being angry. It would be enough to make you sick. Sarah Marks, the almost invisible main character in 'Swallow', was an intelligent, six year old girl. Everybody knew that there was something dreadfully wrong with Sarah, but nobody talked about it and nobody could help her. She got along well with her parents, was very good at behaving as if everything was okay and in this way she could faultlessly imitate adults. But the negation of the negative side of life was unbearable for her, she was too clever to be dismissed empty-handed. With 'Swallow', Elisabeth Subrin subtly tells how depressed a child can get with false appearances. Particularly a girl, because girls are not supposed to be aggressive, girls are always sweet and pleasant. It was only the second wave of feminism that brought changes which were almost too late for Sarah Marks.
