The sky and its exacting protocol

Videotape, 29:00, colour & black-and-white, mono
A desert landscape with above it an immense blue sky. This image remains for several minutes while a man’s voice goes through a check list as pilots should before taking off. It is clear: this is about the fascination of all people who have ever stared longingly at a climbing kite. A man puts on fire resistant underwear and a pilot’s overall; he then makes movements on the ground with his arms as if rehearsing the choreography of an airshow. A woman off screen gives a lecture about declination variations while an air reconnaissance video camera tracks well nigh unrecognisable ground patterns. A perspiring, violently gulping man tells that flying was always his childhood dream; that feeling of immeasurable freedom however, clashes with a tail spin in which he saw himself being squeezed to vanishing point finally to end up in an all consuming emptiness. Then an endless rider along endless rows of parked fighter jets in the desert. Or a nocturnal trip to an airplane graveyard. Or a discussion about vertigo while the image fades to black. "Do you read me?" "No." With all these fantasies about flying it is all the more frustrating that no flying is done.
