Kae, act like a girl!
  Japan 1996
Videotape, 47:09, colour, stereo
Her most recent production considers themes that were covered in earlier works: the art of painting (‘Kiyoko’s situation’ from 1989), the way in which (Japanese) society treats women and the cliché like narrative style which thanks to ingenious manipulation gains nuance and depth. This time the central figure is Kae, a student at the art college who, because of her relationship with a fellow male student, gradually has to give up her ambitions as an artist. When her friend Moru suddenly turns out to be a despot and stereotype man, Kae decides that it will go no further. She will do whatever she can once again to prove herself to be an artist. She even gets her mother involved in the programme. Her mother has a more traditional role for Kae in mind: subjugated to that of the man. Here too, monitors, which provide dialogue and memories with depth, are used to give the rather obvious story line tension and meaningful alienation effects.
