Videotape, 50:45, colour & black-and-white, mono
A close-up of a disposable ball point printed with the name of a company in Los Angeles. Gabler. This dumb thing was the inspiration for a fantastic story and a beautiful penetrating video report. They hadn’t seen each other for eighty years: Golda and Roza. Sisters from a Hungarian Jewish family who, for various reasons, would only see each other again when their lives were almost lived out. The pen was the messenger which reconnected the worlds of Roza and Golda. The camera follows the events of Hungarian Golda’s trip with her grandson Gusztáv to Los Angeles. The media are heavily represented at the airport to record the reunion of the two old women. As far as the subject goes, the story of Golda and Roza is not unfittingly placed alongside the victory of the American troops in the Mother of all Battles. Despite the fact that the sisters neither speak or understand each other’s language, the joy of their meeting is overwhelming. The incompatibility resulting from life under completely different circumstances is masterfully put into perspective by the two happy, but non communicating sisters.
