  Joe Gibbons
Barbie’s audition
  USA 1995
Videotape, 12:57, black-and-white, mono
It is a tour de force, although anybody could have thought it up on an inspirationally deprived afternoon. The content side of the story is pure cliche, but no less true to life because of that. The design could be summed up as simple or even indolent, because any ding-bat can point a camera, push the record button and let the tape do its work. Nonetheless, it is a cinematographic achievement to conceive a programme in one take/shot. The conclusion must be that Gibbons’ result ranges from confrontational to downright painful. A man acts out an audition for a film using a Barbie doll: it’s all about ‘screen presence’. She has no text; he is trying to put her at her ease in an ‘artistically responsible’ screen test. It ends up as a rancid assault - and well intentioned, but tasteless, apologies. In this tape, sexual harassment in the workplace is severely dealt with.
