This video post script is based on a gloomy text from the Austrian poet Konrad Bayer (from his ‘Der sechste Sinn’) which in all its contradictions and rotating perspectives is turned inside out by actor Adolfo Assor. Suicide was the ultimate consequence for Bayer of his logic of contradictions. In a virtuoso performance, the actor succeeds in conveying the oscillation between irony and insanity, playfulness and despair. The absurd beauty of the images, the strange setting of each of the scenes and the editing, based on vicious self criticism, are the mediatised attributes with which the text in all its contradictive clarity interrogates life. When survival is unmasked as a great lie and life is an insoluble conflict between contradiction and resistance, there seems to be no other solution but the only, ‘exemplary’ one which this testament offers. The ultimate balance is formed by the viewer who determines if he/she only feels uncomfortable under this interrogation of life, or that the temptation of protest leads to the incarnated ‘contradictio in se’.
