From high to low: heaven, earth, water. Three different worlds which can exist next to each other at the same place, as can be seen from this triptych by Dihanet. He once again gives shape to his fascination for the borders between land, water and air (see for example ‘Croquis de voyage’ from 1994). We seen no people in the ‘heaven’, we can only hear their pious singing. There are people on the earth, they are taking a trip to the sea whilst an excited football commentator can be heard from the radio. In the silent world under the water, it is only the sound of divers breathing and Dihanet’s seaweed and shell covered sculptures that witness to the existence of man. Since the eighties, Dihanet has placed his sculptures carefully at selected places in the sea where they will be constantly changed and threatened by the powers of nature. That disappearance process has been documented on video and in photos. With time however, the concrete sculptures have become less important in Dihanet’s work and intangible elements like time, space and movement have gradually come to the fore.
