This animation, made on a MAC, was inspired by the Amsterdam Cable Television channel scanning screen. Vanessa van Dam formed alternative connections between the viewer’s living room and the world outside by alternating the images of the various TV channels with other kinds of images: a series of Amsterdam front doors, interiors and landscapes respectively. Simultaneously, she replaces the texts and titles that belong to the original channel screens. Under the ‘real’ TV images you suddenly read: “The proximity / of the world / via / the / screen / means / nothing / about / the / involvement / with it”, while the names of the channels are listed by the landscape images, the numbers by the front doors, and by the interiors is listed if they are the upstairs neighbour or the neighbour on the right. It’s not just the significance of the TV image as a so-called ‘window on the world’ that changes, but also the mutual relationship between the images.
