Video cannibalism
  Brazil 1995
Videotape, 16:50, colour & black-and-white, mono
Directly into the lens, Carelli tells of his meeting with an indian tribe in the Mato Grosso. This village of 240 inhabitants has gone in one leap from the time of oral tradition to the audio visual culture. They appear to have had no difficulty in adapting. They clown unselfconsciously and with great abandon whenever they see a VHS camera aimed at them. In particular the sexual jokes produce great hilarity when they watch their own capers in the evenings. An female anthropologist explains that the shyness of the women is only apparent. A myth about the father of their tribe with his endlessly long penis is infectiously presented in animation. A showing of ‘Dancing with wolves’ ensures a sold-out village square. It takes a while before they all realise that a dead actor was not really shot, but then the enthusiasm is boundless. The members of the tribe had already put on a real life performance of a recent attack by the Cinta, their cannibalistic neighbours and now they decide to film their fight with the white gold prospectors. ‘The Enauéné Naué present ... THE INVADERS’. With natural talent, splendid costumes of feathers and grass and gallons of red paint they perform a blood-chilling drama. Don’t miss the first (short) film from the Amazon!
