Rotodynamics in 3D

Mark Bain is a multi media artist who creates mechanical sculptures, installations with machines and videos which are often interactive. He calls them decoding machines or translating equipment which are an abstract reflection of the world about us. A world in which there are no longer any clear boundaries and in which concepts which were previously established have been called into question. One single idea can be expressed simultaneously in different works by Bain whereby things like perception, dynamics and information exchange play an important role. ‘Rotodynamics in 3D’, the title already says it, is a 3D video that has to be seen through special glasses. The 3D technique is that of rotation: if the forms were stationary or only moved backwards and forwards then the third dimension would not be perceived. For three and half minutes we are lost in a completely mechanised, abstract world of rotating and flowing forms, accompanied by the metalic sounds and bleeps of a radio. Time and movement are laid in layers over each other by the use of fluids and slow-motion shutter times which make it all even more abstract.
