Installation
‘Schaulust’ plays on everybody’s well known tendency on passing a window, involuntarily to glance inside. The voyeuristic pleasure of catching a glimpse of others in intimate situations is encouraged by contrasting it with a certain degree of exhibitionism.

The installation consists of seven video tapes of people in domestic situations playing out a number of simple scenes from daily life. These images are projected from inside onto windows and in such a way that from outside, it looks as though you are simply looking in through the windows. Since the scale of the projected images has been adjusted, the scenes seem very realistic. ‘Schaulust’ was first exhibited in the Brigitta Schenk Galerie in Cologne projected onto six windows which were visible from the busy street. Viewers were surprised by a confusing spectacle of watching and being watched. The sense of realism is increased when characters do things with the windows, like wash them, and sometimes seeming to react to the public outside by closing the curtains and then peering through the crack between them. As well as the relationship with the viewer, a narrative relationship between the scenes gradually seems to develop. Since the tapes vary in length from 15 to 30 minutes and are played on an auto-repeat function, there are always new combinations and therefore new relationships to be seen.

‘Schaulust’ will be shown on the renowned Priva-lite window on the Spui during the World Wide Video Festival. The window has been adapted to create the illusion of two floors, the gable of two similar houses. The windows which are not used are curtained: the people there are simply not at home.
