Is is not is
  Netherlands 1991
Videotape, 6: 42, colour, stereo
The work of the image pioneer Muybridge is not entirely unknown in the wondrous world of video art. After, for example, Bódy and Snow, Schoeber falls back on Muybridge by means of the dog Maggie (1884). Rolf Schoeber himself describes his production as follows: ''A survey into truth, change, words, conclusion, the human mind, the lot''. A bit of a smart Alec that Schoeber, although there is an element of truth in his pseudo-pretentious explanation. 'Is is not is' deals with the reaction of dogs to language. An instruction tape for dog trainers- In that case, only for English dogs and ditto owners. It so happens that a dog reacts better to words of four letters. But Fikki reacts well to 'off' doesn't he- Muybridge's Maggie in contrast carries on running and ultimately disintegrates - to the command 'kill' - in the pixels of the electronic image.
