Chico ou o País da Delicadeza Perdida
  Brazil 1991
Videotape, 56:00
The production from Walter Salles (João Moreira Salles' brother) and Nelson Motta celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Brazilian singer and poet Chico Buarque using his recollections, presented as memories of the country Brazil. A festive occasion, as is witnessed by the images of the special concert in which Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa also worked. Chico Buarque de Holanda, as his full name is, comes from one of the most intellectual families in Brazil. His song texts are amongst the most literary in Brazilian popular music, whereby he finds inspiration in the works of Noel Rosa, the thirties composer often compared with Cole Porter. But Chico Buarque is also a folk hero whose comforting songs soothed and encouraged during the dictatorship in Brazil. Four years ago, David Byrne introduced Chico Buarque's music to a larger Western audience in his cd compilation 'Beleza tropical'.
