The authorities in the former Soviet Union considered pop music to be an instrument of the western bourgeoisie to benumb the youth so that they could not develop any politic awareness. With the fall of communism, the pop musicians have surfaced. Even the promotion of pop music is done along Western lines: the majority of clips are not very original and of doubtful quality. Yuri Balabánov is a favourable exception. This singer's clips excel in innovation, creativity and - unusual in the pop music world - historical awareness. 'With you along the bank ...' shows, in grey-black images, the life of a prisoner being transported in a heavily guarded and barred train. The images seem to come straight out of the Stalin nightmare. 'Bob's funeral' is based on Josef Bródskij's poem of the same name. This deals ironically with the communist view of the 1917 revolution. History always plays the same tune: the naive masses create political heroes who, once they are in power, act just as absurdly as their predecessors.
