Involuntary Conversion
  USA 1991
Videotape, 9:20, colour & black-and-white, stereo
American society lives in peace, or in other words 'in the days of permanent pre?hostility'. In the urbanised areas, one lives in fear, fear unconsciously fed by the 'double speak' of the authorities. The leaders have numerous disguising descriptions for words like death, sickness, being fired and unemployment. They are slightly anaesthetising formulas, but a nod is as good as a wink to be aware of this manipulation. 'Involuntary conversion' is a penetrating tape in which Jeanne C. Finley couples texts from the media (including texts from vice?president Dan Quayle) with threatening images of circling spy planes and the concrete decay of the sickness 'urban sprawl'. Image and text form a hypnotic rhythm that holds up a sinister mirror to the 'double speak' of those in power.
