  The Ex & Guests
Live at the Bim-huis
  Netherlands 1992
Videotape, 80:00
A remarkable event took place in the jazz temple BIM-Huis in Amsterdam on 29th June 1991 when the inimitable pop group The Ex appeared in concert with punk band Dog Faced Hermans and the trend-setting jazz improvisors Wolter Wierbos, Ab Baars and Han Bennink. Composer Dorpsoudste De Jong and the Belgian comic and strip cartoonist Herr Seele also took part. Now, there are no flies on the internationally famous The Ex - recently stripped of the label 'anarchopunk' by the critics. Parochialism is unfamiliar to Katrin (drums), Luc (bass), Terrie (guitar) and G.W. Sok (vocal) and the quartet's idiosyncratic music, permeated with social realism, has developed during the last ten years into a totally individual and recognisable sound. Besides working with the above mentioned big names from the world of Dutch improvised jazz, The Ex has also worked in the past few years with such diverse musicians as the American cellist Tom Cora, the Belgian duo Kamagurka & Herr Seele and the Kurdish singer Brader. Last summer, The Ex gave a memorable performance in the BIM-Huis with master percussionist Han Bennink, reed player Ab Baars and trombonist Wolter Wierbos. Earlier this year, several sections of this concert appeared on disc, but fortunately, the entire performance was also recorded on video by the local Amsterdam TV channel Vide-TV. Whilst the recording 'The Ex & Guests live in the BIM-Huis' is premiered in the Face the Music programme, The Ex will be on tour again in America with Tom Cora.
