'Paris is burning', a recent documentary film, shows the life of black transvestites and transsexuals in New York. The general impression that remained after watching for 75 minutes was gratitude for having been able to live with the main characters - with their intense pleasure, with the good-natured bitchiness of their interpersonal relationships, with their sometimes shockingly naive dreams and with the underlying hard reality of exploitation, discrimination and murder. To some extent, 'Casa particular' confronts us with the real truth that lies concealed behind the glitter and the glamour of all those 'house' competitions. Santiago de Chile is after all no New York. Here we see a few miserably made up transvestites crappily dancing a bit to a tango ditty. Their vogue poses are doubly sad in the merciless lighting. And yet, the end offers some hope. In a tableau vivant they play a kitschy version of the painting of the Last Supper. Nonetheless, I wonder if Gregorian music can be heard too in every day Santiago.
