Mantron (Monoton) The Tokyo tape
  Japan 1991
Videotape, 54:00
'Mantron' is perhaps the fastest video ever made. This recording, provided with computer animation, of a performance given by the Austrian whiz kid Konrad Becker last year in Tokyo with American composer and percussionist Z'ev, does not hesitate to bombard the viewer with staccato edited images of a half frame. Music of the driving house variant forms a perfect relation here with video and computer techniques. The speed gives Becker's imagery something of a subliminal message. The not infrequently suggestive animation is almost elusive to the naked eye, although images do imprint themselves upon the retina and in the subconscious. 'Mantron' sucks the viewer in and transports him (her) to a hyperdimension in which image and sound form an enchanting entity. 'Mantron' is sexy, compulsive, inflammatory and hypnotic. Konrad Becker performs electronic magic here; 'Techno-shamanism'.
