  Laurie Anderson
Carmen
  Spain 1991
The opening scene in the tobacco factory looks more like an information film about the manufacture of Ducados. As Carmen glides through the summer's evening on her scooter, the camera swinging along with her shows enough Sevillian city beauty to make the local tourist industry happy. And the promo clip for the world city of Seville shown on a television is the only source of colour in the grey home port of the heroine until a bashful toreador ends up at the door with a bunch of roses. Using irony as the most important stylistic element, Laurie Anderson produced a film, commissioned for Expo '92, with which both her clients and the admirers of previous video work can be satisfied. Unless they are waiting for the distinctive whispering sound of the voice of La Anderson, because that is missing from this version of Bizet's opera.
