Art of Memory: the Legend
  USA 1987
Videotape, 36:00, colour
'Art of Memory: the Legend' is as yet an unfinished production, a work in progress, and has, because of its complex structure and epical character, enormous tension. The history of the world, and how we remember it, is the main issue of this production. The role of film and photography, and their function as collective memory is under investigation. The disappearance of film as historical documentation nowadays is compared to the loss of that memory and of our cultural awareness. Photos and turbulent black and white images from films made during World War II are contrasted with the apparently changeless landscape of the American South-West. Again and again the film-images change into other frames, sowithimes they rip the landscape open just to disappear into it. An angel standing motionless on a rock seems to symbolize eternity. Battle hymns enhance the dramatic content of the film fragments and photos and are alternated with ethereal sounds and introvert images.
