WORLD WIDE SOLO
MARINA ABRAMOVIC

8 - 25 May
The Netherlands
Media Art Institute

From 1965 till 1970 Marina Abramovic (1946) attends the Fine Arts Academy in Belgrade. In 1976 she goes to live and work in Amsterdam, where she meets the artist Ulay, with whom she starts an intensive collaboration. From 1976 till 1988 they appear together in performances in which exploring their personal limits is the central theme. For Abramovic a performance is a direct exchange of energy between her and the audience; an exchange she wishes to initiate by means of a very personal approach. She regards her performances, installations and videos as mirrors wherein people may recognize themselves.

In Portrait Gallery (1975-2002) sixteen monitors show sixteen performances where Abramovic takes her own head as the starting point. A direct virtual contact with the visitors to the exhibition is established in the performance Mambo (2003). On a life size projection screen Abramovic performs a dance on an iron dance floor wearing shoes with magnetic soles. The audience gets to wear the same type of shoes and is invited to dance the mambo with her. In the installation At the Waterfall (2003) quiet and inspiration are the central themes. During a stay at a Tibetan monastery she records 106 monks and nuns singing. An entire gallery wall of singing heads becomes a waterfall of image and sound.

In the autobiographical work Road Movie (2003) Abramovic opens up her own life to us. This video demonstrates how important a nomadic existence is to her work. Besides the new works that were made especially for this exhibition, a survey of older work will be presented. The Performance Anthology Abramovic – Ulay (1976-1987) is a broad selection of recordings of performances that Abramovic did together with Ulay.

The exhibition by Marina Abramovic is a result of a collaboration between the World Wide Video Festival and the Netherlands Media Art Institute. It is the first in a series of solo exhibitions by media artists working in the Netherlands that will be held each year at the Netherlands Media Art Institute during the festival.
