Ex.spectators

  Germany 2000 - 2001
Single channel video, 8:34 loop, black&white, stereo

The film features individual members of cinema audiences, who are describing their expectations of the films they are going to see. The verbal monologues of the various people in the film appear as white subtitles in English on a black screen. This is the only image of the film. The spectators were strangers sitting next to the artist in the cinema, people with whom he was chatting just before the films began. Throughout the 'movie' we hear the sounds of the audience, the whispering of the 'exspectators' and the theme-music of the films they are about to view. This video can be shown on a single monitor or as a video/audio installation in a small cinema designed by the artist. The primary concept of the work is based on a critical 'cinematic' idea around the notion of 'cinema' and film itself. It works with the same medium, with the same architectural concept and focuses and reflects on the audience that is watching and expecting.

The work presents 'exspectators' of the following films:

The Carriers are Waiting Ghost Dog, Sleepy Hollow, Holy Smoke, Kings of the Road, Sweet and Lowdown, Girl Interrupted, Conspirators of Pleasure, Being John Malkovich, A Clockwork Orange,
