Car Park Procession

South Africa 2000 - projections from video and drawn animation
each 1.8 x 9 m on a 7-minute loop, Beta presentation, colour, stereo
This work was commissioned by and for RETREKS under the proposition 'How the other half...' and constitute the conceptual-artistic spine of the unSUNg CITY event: RETREKS unSUNg CITY was first shown as a 'nine story multimedia show' at Kings City Parkade, Johannesburg, September 30, 2000.
'Car Park Procession' was made as an occasional piece for once-off screening, and, according to Kentridge (who has only ever seen it on a television screen) never conceived to survive transitions to different contexts or spaces. The bright colours at the start of the piece are objects purchased from street merchants in the vicinity of the car park where the project originally happened. Kentridge has been working with shadow figures in various guises and media for around two years now, and the cage-like silhouette objects fall into this ongoing investigation. Although the film's first edit included a soundtrack, the artist decided finally "to leave it mute, to take its chances with the sounds of the streets around the car park."
