'sulsouth – voyages into mutant technologies' has been curated by Jose Ferreira. It was first shown 26 April – May 13, 2001 at the Instituto Camões, Centro Cultural Português, Maputo. Jose Ferreira is an artist born in Maputo, Mozambique. He lives and works in London.
The emotive acts by which we assume the symbolic, like a gesture of erasure are the focal point of this work. Erasure implies several states of being which are all complicit in this one action. The mark of the broom references mark making, an adaptation of an art-historical canon, the sweeping in this context erases the footprints while leaving the mark of the bristles of the broom embedded in the sand. It is non-erasure. Ferreira is interested in the way footprints are implicated in acts of transgression.
