'sulsouth – voyages into mutant technologies' has been curated by Jose Ferreira. It was first shown 26 April – May 13, 2001 at the Instituto Camões, Centro Cultural Português, Maputo. Jose Ferreira is an artist born in Maputo, Mozambique. He lives and works in London.
This video was made in memory of an embroidery in 'petit point' made by Ferreira's friend Narrelle Jubelin. It renders a snapshot taken by the artist's mother in 1964. The picture shows six year old Ferreira sticking out her tongue. She and her brother are sitting by the swimming pool on board the passenger liner 'Principe Perfeito', travelling from Portugal to Mozambique. Hence 'Crossing the Line'. The line in this case is the equator. This video is about colonial travel, the difference between North and South.
