in/tangible cartographies
new arab video

De Appel: Sat 27 Oct 8.30 – 10.30

Jayce Salloum will elaborate on in/tangible cartographies: new arab video, an extensive programme of videotapes from (among others) Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and Syria, which he compiled at the request of the World Wide Video Festival.

Arab countries have recently produced an impressive array of works: video art, personal essays and experimental documentaries. These works deal with interstitiality between countries, cultures, influences, politics, ideologies, and subjective dispositions/dispossessions. They incorporate a fascinating blend of critical stances and traditional (filmic and cultural) influences. J.S.

Jayce will show tapes and extracts of some of the video's. Also present will be Nesrine Khodr.
The complete programme is available for viewing at the World Wide Media Lounge at Baby, Keizersgracht 676, Amsterdam until November 11th.

After this evening the World Wide Media Lounge in Baby will be open.

X<AFRIKA 3.1
De Brakke Grond: Fri 2 Nov 8.30 – 10.30 p.m.

A Video Concert by Walter Verdin
Among the key themes of the 19th World Wide Video Festival this year is African media art. linked with this, on Friday, November 2, Walter Verdin presents the video concert 'X<Afrika 3.1' in the Brakke Grond. This concert for image and sound is based on percussion rhythms from the Malinke and Bété tribe from West Africa and combines rhythmically edited video with percussion music performed live.

X<Afrika 3.1
Late in 1993 Verdin travelled to the Ivory Coast with percussionist Frank Michiels. This became a journey of discovery, seeking African percussion rhythms, basic material for the video concert 'X<Afrika', a creation for the ArtFESTIVAL des Arts in 1996. Since then various versions of the concert have been presented in The Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Finland. The concert in the Brakke Grond is the third revised instrumental version, suitable for smaller auditoriums. This time it is a collaboration between Walter Verdin (samples and keyboards), Frank Michiels (percussion) and El Hadji Diayé Rose (sabar and djembe). El Hadji is the son of Doudou N'Diayé Rose, the world-renowned Senegalese master drummer.

Location
The Red Auditorium of the Brakke Grond, Nes 45, 1012 KD Amsterdam.
