A woman is being made up and by this is learning how to develop her charms and camouflage her shortcomings. The final result is surprising. In this work Priscilla Monge alludes to the permanent and problematic relationship between temptation and aggression. It is also a reference to the western ideal of beauty imposed on society by the media, fashion designers, the cosmetics industry and Hollywood. Monge is one of a group of artists in Costa Rica who take a critical stand against the changes in the community and life in Costa Rica. They cast doubt on the official doctrine of equality and justice as carried out by the state institutions. Monge's work is from the very first an investigation into a veiled reality in a consistent, highly conceptual framework. Far from taking a traditional feministic position, Monge turns directly towards the underlying aspects of a self-satisfied social environment which is not disputable: the subtle patterns of aggression and dominating mechanisms, the ambiguous relationship between victim and perpetrator. Ambiguity characterizes Monge's work: "Is it real or is it only a game?" She works here yet again with the relationships between love and hate, victim and aggressor, and enriches them with innumerable new layers.
