Destiny

videotape – 12:20 min

This video seems to be concrete in its posit but vague in its answer. 'Destiny' starts with the black-and-white images of an ultrasound scan of fetus Lara. In the middle of the grainy image another image appears that also moves and grows – a case, which in its turn forms the background for other unclear images. The blur of the whole is broken by the word 'destino' that momentarily appears on screen. Does the future belong to this tiny unborn life? Together with the images we hear a speech given by the former Argentinean President Carles Menem alternating with a poem by Oliverio Girondo. Through the case and against a blue background we see a helicopter propeller twirling around. An ominous image, for the helicopter is directly above the filmmaker, as though he/she is literally being kept under control. The surmise that this refers to the dictatorship that held Argentina in its grip for years seems to be confirmed by staccato-like sounds accompanying the images. Shortly afterwards the image of the helicopter dissolves and the ultrasound scan is visible again, this time with people marching at the bottom of the screen. Are they soldiers? The future and the past of a country caught in one image? 'Destiny' refers to both, it seems. An unborn child. A revolving globe, complete with the hands of a clock. Time ticks on. The future is the future and cannot be stopped. With the phrase "the power of destiny always showing the horizon" Diáz Morales offers us some clarification. Is the fate of a country connected with its past? Undoubtedly. This does not, however, necessarily entail any negative implications. A fetus growing in the womb has ample opportunity to shape its own future. Or is the fetus here the representation of a path for an entire nation?
